Villeray - Montreal
2021
1 300 sq ft
Located on the first floor of a Montreal duplex, the Villeray project involves the redevelopment of a 1930s apartment to meet the needs of a growing family.
Vives St-Laurent presents this classic yet contemporary project, which will evolve over time as the residents' lifestyles change.
Respecting the architectural character of the apartment, the studio rethinks the relationships and openings between the different living areas, which were previously partitioned.
The brief: create a master suite with bathroom and wardrobe, create an additional shower room and rethink the living spaces while renovating the kitchen.
The aim was to optimize the existing square footage by creating ergonomic, quality spaces.
The proposed layout offers a through-living area in which the living room, dining room and kitchen communicate with each other. The central corridor has been retained, but is now more open to the living areas.
The simple layout of the kitchen is dictated by its narrow surface area: full-height furniture on either side of the central island creates a visual dynamic towards the rear façade and enhances the relationship with the courtyard.
The sober materiality of the cabinets and counter allows the volumes to blend seamlessly into the now open living space.
The central island in stained white oak appears as a unique piece of furniture, contrasting with the sobriety of the cabinets. The quartz hood and shelf complete the kitchen's composition, adding a touch of liveliness.
The dining room incorporates a new bespoke table for up to 8 people. A wall-mounted bookcase also serves as credenza and additional storage for the area. For aesthetic consistency, the bookcase is finished in the same wood as the kitchen's central island.
In the bathroom of the master suite, the atmosphere is sober, but the details add cachet to the room. A warm white tile is staggered on the walls.
The tiles around the edges are molded with a rounded nose, creating a transition with the other surfaces. On the floor, a herringbone mosaic enlivens the entire space. The custom-designed vanity surrounds the existing window to better integrate the furniture.
