Project description
Located in Saint-Bruno on Montreal's South Shore, the Montpellier residence is set in picturesque surroundings, with winding streets and mature trees. Built in the late 1960s by a local architect, it now ranks in the cultural heritage repertoire as an emblematic example of Quebec's Mid-Century aesthetic.
According to the description: "This modern residence, typical of North American bungalows, [...] is distinguished by its volumetric interplay and clean lines. Clad entirely in brick, the house has no ornamentation, leaving plenty of room for the expressiveness of the materials. The residence is composed of three distinct, single-storey volumes linked by a glass passageway."
The design team's main challenge was to achieve a significant transformation while preserving the architectural aesthetic established by the original architect. The initial mandate was to renovate the living areas: vestibule, kitchen, dining room, lounges and powder room. Various interventions were also carried out to improve comfort, notably by opening up the kitchen to offer a view of the courtyard and allow for better natural lighting.
